ParTec AG and HZDR Launch AI Supercomputer for Advanced Research in AI, Quantum Computing, and HPC

ParTec AG, a leader in modular supercomputing, and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), a renowned research institution, have announced a collaboration to develop one of the world’s most powerful AI supercomputers, named ‘ELBJUWEL’. This initiative aims to bolster research in artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, and high-performance computing (HPC), setting a new benchmark in computational research capabilities.

The ELBJUWEL project is designed to serve as a central hub for AI technologies, promoting both scientific research and economic development in Saxony and across Germany. With an anticipated performance peak, this supercomputer will enable complex simulations and data analyses, which are crucial for advancements in AI, machine learning, and quantum computing fields.

Key Features of ELBJUWEL:

  • Performance: Expected to deliver about 50 exaflops in 8-bit floating-point operations, making it one of the top AI supercomputers globally.
  • Purpose: To facilitate cutting-edge research in materials, health, and energy sectors, with a special focus on integrating AI with quantum computing.
  • Local Advantage: The project emphasizes digital sovereignty, allowing German and European companies to process data locally, enhancing security and reducing dependency on international cloud services.

This collaboration not only underscores the commitment of ParTec AG and HZDR to foster innovation but also highlights the strategic importance of having high computational power available locally for research and industrial applications.

The initiative is set to attract global scientists to Dresden, further establishing the region as a pivotal center for technology and research. Moreover, it aims to train skilled workers, thereby supporting the digital transformation challenges faced by businesses today.

By integrating ParTec’s expertise in modular HPC systems with HZDR’s research prowess, the ELBJUWEL supercomputer is poised to unlock new possibilities in AI and quantum technology, potentially leading to breakthroughs in various scientific disciplines and industrial applications. This project reflects a significant step towards achieving European digital autonomy and advancing the global landscape of computational research.
